A new and provocative analysis of American history identifies the astonishing sets of ideas and events that came together in a burst of political will to create the United States of America.

Political Will’s author, Bill Loughrey — an authority on U.S. historical development, and long involved in the private sector, federal service, and the non-profit sector — shows how the innovative spirit of the early Americans paved the way in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries for breathtaking advances in science, technology, and living standards. Wave after wave of revolutionary change created much of the wealth we now possess and was responsible in the twentieth century for the American victories in World Wars I and II and the Cold War.

Loughrey describes how for 200 years Americans have collectively determined sets of values and how the will of the people was transmitted into political action that caused our culture to prosper and our union of 13 small colonies to grow into a world superpower.

Although public opinion exerts enough political action today that continues U.S.  innovation and nurtures a civil society which addresses human problems, the energetic system of values utilized by our forefathers has become weak. As a result, America and Western civilizations find themselves in eclipse; with Asia and Islam becoming ascendant, we are thus engaged today in a global struggle to maintain our way of life.

The challenges facing the American colonists — developing a democratic civilization to address the failures of European monarchies, converting from an agricultural to an industrial economy, and incorporating wave after wave of immigrants — were similar in complexity and no less daunting than the problems confronting us today: globalization, an explosion of new technology, global warming, a fierce fight over cultural values, and converting from an industrial-age to an information-age economy.

With a panoramic perspective on history and current events, this book shows in detail what went wrong and — if Americans can again exert their revolutionary political will — suggests how the United States can get back on track.

Bill Loughrey’s experience ranges from business to government, and from politics to the nonprofit sector.  He has started up a half dozen small businesses and worked as a senior executive for a Fortune 500 company.

Bill worked first in the U.S. House of Representatives on the Watergate reforms and then as chief of staff to Senator Arlen Specter.  In his early government service he directed the staff of a federal regulatory agency.  He has been involved in more than a hundred political campaigns.  Bill served on boards of many community and non-profit organizations.  He lives in Milton, Georgia, with his wife and  have two children.
